Matt Hefler Presents: On This Day October 6, 1973

On this day (October 6th) in 1973: Outbreak of the Yom Kippur War as Arab states of Egypt and Syria attack Israel on the Jewish Day of Atonement. The 1973 Arab-Israeli War was waged from 6 to 25 October 1973 and mainly saw a coalition led by Syria and Egypt attempt to seize territory in Sinai and the Golan which had been occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War of 1967. The war shaped Cold War relations of the great powers. While Israel stemmed enemy advances and indeed pushed back, especially into Egypt, there are arguments to be made that the conflict help lead Israeli leaders to doubt whether they could always be sure of defeating hostile Arab coalitions.
