On this day (October 8th) in 2003: Arnold Schwarzenegger wins the Governorship of California, replacing the incumbent, Gray Davis. It was the first time in California’s history that a governor had been sacked in the middle of a term. The mid-term vote had been prompted by Republican leaders who were dissatisfied in Governor Davis’ performance. Voters chose to recall Davis in a two-part ballot. The only governor to be recalled previously was Lynn Frazier of North Dakota in 1921.
