About Matt Hefler

Dr. Matthew Hefler is a specialist of international history and intelligence studies. His research focuses on the role of intelligence, subversion, and the activities of secret services within international diplomacy.

Currently Matt is an Ax:son Johnson Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Statecraft and Strategic Communication at the Stockholm school of Economics, and a member of the Ax:son Johnson Institute for Statecraft and Diplomacy.

He received his PhD in War Studies from the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. At KCL Matt was a Commonwealth Scholar, Rotary International Global Grant Scholar (Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution), and the recipient of funding from the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF).

Previously Matt served as a part-time instructor in the Department of History at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. In 2021 he served as Press Secretary to the Premier of Nova Scotia.
